I stay in small hotel in Shuiwan, Shikou. On my way to Hotel from the Shuiwan subway station to Hotel, the Nanshui Street is interesting. While high rise apartments and officebuildings with neatly decorated shopping mall in lower level of the building around subway station looks boring, the small shops, street restaurant and bustling people along with the street are exciting. The car and pedestrian road is covered with stone. the marginal space in front of store front is separated by few steps from pedestrian. The canophy above the storefront protects people from rain and strong sunshine. The ratio of the road and the height of the building is 1:1 which is preferred as most amicable proportion of urban space. So to speak, the Nanshui street can be called as an exemplary case of urban design. Of course, the street does not show neatly decorated urban landscape. There are puddles, cracked stone tiles, construction debris on the road and people without shirts eating lunch in the street restaurant. These urban landscape is both strange and familiar to me since I have seen this kind of steet and urban village when I was young in Korea. So I might feel friendly to this urban village.

Is this only my impression in Shuiwan?  The foreign friends who I met here likes this village too. We like the time and memory as well as human scale in this village. There is empty parking lot where more than 300 hundred years old trees in the middle of this village. The tree is six stories high. The branches are rich. And the leaves provide people with rest area of shadow. My mind is calm and serene when I am seeing the tree. Around trees, there are old restaurants which have at least 20 years old history. Once you have the meal in the restaurant, you would greet the friendly people the restaurant. In the place of time and memory, aliens become part of the memory in the village soon. Remember yourself as a traveler whether you are welcomed in city of time and memory or newly constructed city where people don’t remember where it used to be.

If I say we have to keep this city of memory even though the city of memory looks not special, then the developer would hate it. Even the local people who lives in this city might not understand why it has to be kept. For them it might be just repeating daily city life and romantic temporary view from the stranger. Maybe the everyday urbanism might be out of dated.

However, it is for sure that the place of parking lot with the 300 years old trees, of human scaled urban street, and ordinary urban village with bustling people is better than the place of hise-rise apartment, office, and shopping mall inside of the building and underground. It is even more sure that the vlaule of this everyday ordinary place will go up since these area is disappearing. I am not saying that you have to keep the all the ordinary urban village. The city of Shenzen has demolished most part of these ordinary urban villages to build the boring skyscrapers. People in Shenzen might say that the history of the urban villages is only twenty years old. Is it worth to keep? Yes, You can see the harmony of cacophony between urban village and skyscrapers. The old village and new city works together.

For example, the most popular and high rental priced area in Seoul, Korea is Garosu-gil, Hong-ik, and Itaewon. These towns are not developed as big town to be demolished. Artists starts to renovate the existing ordinary buildings to be their studio and café. The narrow streets connects people to road. The scale of the town is human scale as Nanshui Road in Shekou. These town has kept the time and memory of the place.

If the City of Shenzen has to demolish the urban village, we propose the “The City That Re-Lives Its Memory”.The installation structure in the exhibition is in the form of the factory building the biennale takes place. Basically composed of several levels of slabs and columns in between, the structure is then filled with ordinary things from the city: brick walls, metal frames, billboards, used furniture, tiles, dishes, old books, some plants, bikes, and etc. In a reduced scale, these contents come together as a three-dimensional collage.

Our vision is that in the end the biennale venue site will change according to our installation. The factory building will be re-populated by those who bring in with them reusable things that will be used to set up spaces. Instant walls will go up and people will freely punctuate spaces according to their needs. In this way, this vision will become an instant and regenerative urbanism that revives the city’s memories by utilizing the ordinary.

The truth is that you cannot revive the memory of the city once it gets erased. Therefore, the memory of the city is priceless. Korean has been erased the memory of the city for several decades to demolish the urban village to build high rise apartment. Now they are regretting to know how much the memory of the city was valuable by breaking down of the price of apartment. They lost something they cannot buy with money. It might be not too late for City of Shenzen to realize the value of the Re-Living memory of the city through this Bi-City Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism.
